Routes

Ready-made road trips around Bosnia and Herzegovina: a day-by-day plan, a budget guideline, key stops, and a map. The country is compact but mountainous - a car opens up what’s hard to reach by public transport: the Herzegovina loop, the river canyons, the highland villages, and the national parks.

How to choose a direction. South - the Herzegovina loop from Mostar to Blagaj, Počitelj, the Kravice waterfalls and Trebinje; the centre - Sarajevo with the Olympic mountains and Konjic; north - Jajce and the Pliva lakes, Una National Park and Bihać, and the wilderness of Sutjeska. Many travelers combine Bosnia and Herzegovina with neighbouring Croatia on a wider Balkans trip.

Season and preparation. The best time for most routes is from late spring to autumn. In winter the mountain sections can be harder, and snow can affect higher passes - check road conditions before setting off, and note that winter tyres are required from mid-November to mid-April. The mileage, days, and budget in the cards are guidelines, not exact measurements: it all depends on the number of stops, the season, and accommodation.
